Hi, Completely new to this and when I get to the Populate Database section and run
paster setup-app development.ini
There is no "paster" command. Where is it. I know it's part of pylon but I don't see that being installed anywhere?
I'm on OS X 10.6.7

Did you create your virtual env as it was outlined in step 1? It's important that you create it, then activate it, then run setup.py. If you don't do it in exactly that order then it won't work.
# Create a new virtual environment:
virtualenv --no-site-packages mediacore_env
# Now, activate that virtual environment:
source mediacore_env/bin/activate
# Make sure you're using the right python.
# This should print the full path to mediacore_env/bin/python
which python
# Install!
cd MediaCore-0.9.0

Thanks for the reply. I thought I'd done exactly what the instructions said. I looked back at my history and I did the three commands like you said. But maybe something went wrong and I missed it in the print out. I just ran it again and this time paster is there?
Although when I run the paster command I get.

Hmm, I think you could have figured out that one yourself. Try to read the traceback (hint: last lines usually contain the root cause).
just if you were not able to figure that one out, I'm giving you the answer:

Obviously the MySQL connection is not working. This can be due to multiple reasons:
- MySQL server is not running
- /opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock is not the correct socket for your MySQL server
- more scary stuff but I think it's one of the two above.

I thought to be sort of stuck at the same point, so I've taken a few steps back, and checked what the second post in this thread says. When I run python setup.py develop (in the virtual environment) it doesn't get passed installing the simplejson dependency . Last two lines of output:
No eggs found in /tmp/easy_install-NU95pw/simplejson-2.1.3/egg-dist-tmp-NHd8he (setup script problem?)
error: Could not find required distribution simplejson
I supose it then halts further setup, because I don't get any 'paster' script anywhere (if I fun a 'find' command on my complete /opt dir, nothing is found).
Any hints on how to get past the simplejson thing?
danomatic: Are you using Mac OS X with Python 2.5 from mac ports? In that case, please use another Python version as 2.5 is broken (there was a Forum post by Anthony or Nathan about this recently).

I am indeed installing this on a Mac OSX 10.6.7 machine, and was using python 2.5. I've installed the virtual-env version 2.7 now as well, and just to make sure:
which python
/opt/mediacore_env/bin/python
python -V
Python 2.7.1
Should tell me that I'm in the proper virtual environment now, and running Python 2.7.1, right??
When I then run the python setup.py develop line, it does get significantly further. It does install dependencies of simplejson, decorator, Unicode, gdata, feedparser and akismet.
When reaching PIL, it gives me:

Any idea? Should I install PIL in a more up to date version via macports myself and then recreate the virtual environment? Just guessing here, I'm more a C / bash person than python / mysql...
Ok, I've changed the 'setup.py' file directly to have
"PIL == 1.1.7" where there was 1.1.6 before, that gets it past there...
up to the next dependency...
