Well, looks like the virtualenv path's got mixed up somehow. From your description the virtualenv should be in '/home/XXXX/mediacore/mediacore_env'.

Looking further at your post, I think I see the culprit: "sudo python setup.py develop".
First of all 'sudo' is not necessary as you are already 'root'. Second it is even harmful in your case because I believe "sudo" will effectively disable the virtualenv.
If you use sudo then use the absolute path for the MediaCore virtualenv python:
sudo /home/XXXX/mediacore/mediacore_env/bin/python setup.py develop
Even better: Just do not use sudo and everything should work.
