   Hello everyone,

   I stumbled upon MediaCore a few weeks ago and with the demo of 0.8, it looks to be a great fit for my podcast network (for the nerdy passion of MTG).

   My question is that I will likely be initially deploying this on a shared host, I am specifically looking at the shared hosting plan on DreamHost (http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html). Would this hosting plan be adequate for atleast a trial of running MediaCore?

   I have been working through the install instructions, including deployment on a share host via "Apache & mod_fastcgi Deployment". I became a bit confused when following the general install instructions (http://getmediacore.com/docs/install/index.html) on how one would perform stage 2 when not having root access to the shell?

   My apologies in advance for the very basic noobish questions, I previously was running a Wordpress install and am slowly learning more about CMS's and basic server usage.

   Hi Tom,

   Thanks for your interest!

   Digging a little further into Dreamhost's documentation, it looks like they support Python 2.4.4, FastCGI, MySQL and provide access to GCC.

   With Python and GCC, you can install virtualenv without setuptools. In fact, if you read the Python link above, you'll see that they give instructions on installing virtualenv. You can use this instead of Step: 0.2 and Step 0.3 in the MediaCore docs.

   It looks like DreamHost has everything that MediaCore needs to run, but there's one caveat: MediaCore 0.8rc2 is untested with Python2.4. So far, MediaCore only officially uses Python2.5. We've made some modifications over the last few weeks that fix the major problems with Python2.4, and we plan to reach full Python2.4 support in our next release, but there may be some issues right now.

   The Python link above also gives instructions on custom compiling Python2.5 for DreamHost, but since you say you're new to this type of geekery, if you want to stick with DreamHost, it may be best to just try your luck with Python2.4.4 and let us know if you run into any problems.
