Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone has had success installing this to a shared hosting provider. My host (1and1) has an older version of Python installed (2.4). I have shell access, so I assume I may be able to compile a newer version from source.
Just wanted to know if anyone has had any success doing something similar.

It really depends on your host, but if you can compile python2.5 then you should be able to install MediaCore too. python2.5 can be installed in parallel to other versions and in your home directory too.
$ your_python25/bin/easy-install2.5 virtualenv
$ your_python25/bin/virtualenv-2.5 --no-site-packages mediacore_env
$ source mediacore_env/bin/activate
$ which python
mediacore_env/bin/pythonNow calling python or paster will use your python2.5 install because it comes first on your $PATH.
Hopefully your host has mod_wsgi support, otherwise you can use mod_rewrite with the proxy flag to point to the paste server. All Pylons deployment methods apply to MediaCore too.

I ended up giving up on trying to install this in a shared environment and ended up upgrading to a virtual slice with root access over at slicehost. The biggest issue I found was that my shared host didn't have GCC installed which made the process very difficult.
I added a patch to remove some Python 2.4 incompatibilities but currently MediaCore just works with Python 2.5+2.6. So currently you either need to resolve this incompatibilities yourself (ask on the mailing list or in this forum) or get a newer Python installation somewhere.
I'm curious why so many people compile their own Python. Doing this correctly, *and+ keeping this installation secure and up-to-date is a *major* task which I try to avoid at all cost (even though I'd describe myself as experienced Python programmer and Fedora packager).
