danny0085: Ubuntu Linux is problematic because they don't offer real stability (even LTS is only for very few packages and the whole universe/multiverse repositories don't get security support by Canonical!). Therefore I'd like to recommend CentOS.

Sam + others: Please – never recompile Python on a production server. CentOS works great for me. Also MediaCore has pretty specific requirements so currently I think you can't run MediaCore completely on distro packages. Usually I use Fedora EPEL on CentOS with a virtualenv for newer packages.

fs

PS: (if you can handle the implications of a self-compiled python, you probably understand why I used strong wording in paragraphs above so strongly). :-)

Actually this was an error in MediaCore which was fixed today:

It definitely works on 10.6 as that is what we all are using.

1. Install XCode - http://developer.apple.com/technology/xcode.html
2. Install MacPorts - http://www.macports.org/install.php
3. Follow the rest of the directions here: http://getmediacore.com/docs/install/index.html#a-note-for-mac-os-x-users

Apparently this is an error with Python 2.6 - the pylons wsgi controller seems to be the issue here. If arguments are passed to object.__init__() gives you an error instead of silently ignoring the error.

We're using Python 2.5 so it might be worth giving that a try. We're using MacPorts to install Python 2.5 instead of 2.6

See this here in the docs:
http://getmediacore.com/docs/install/index.html#a-note-for-mac-os-x-users

Until TurboGears fixes it's issues with 2.6 this will continue to be an issue.

Hope that helps.

I got new error after I start with fresh install.
>> TypeError: object.__init__() takes no parameters
I'm using MediaCore 0.7.2
Snow Leopard 10.6.2; Python 2.6.1 (default)

I don't know how to upgrade with $paster quickstart.
Any advice will be help and appreciate.

The app will only ever use one ini file at a time, so you should double check that you're using the one you mean to be. It sounds to me like you must've accidentally launched with one config file the first time and then a different file later. Are you deploying MediaCore with Apache & mod_wsgi?

Looks like you just need to configure your database username and password. The database user/pw/dbname can be found in development.ini, search for

sqlalchemy.url

— and don't forget to populate your database the data in setup.sql as well!

development.ini should never be used on a production server. Make a production config by running
paster make-config MediaCore deployment.ini
and use that file instead, and that'll work.

development.ini only allows connections from 'localhost', deployment.ini will allow all ips. More importantly, development.ini allows anyone to execute arbitrary python code when an exception occurs. This makes debugging a breeze but you sure wouldn't want to let just anyone do that.

I ended up rebuilding Python 2.5 from source along with the setuptools package and everything seems to work. However, when I run paster serve --reload development.ini I get the following:

Starting subprocess with file monitor
Starting server in PID 7050.
serving on http://127.0.0.1:8080

But when I try to access the app in a browser, the web server doesn't respond. Any ideas?

We're actually using CENTOS 4.6 on our server and it's running pretty well. We haven't tried 5.4 yet, so there may be some complications there. What part of getting python setup are you running into issues with?

As far as ease of installation redhat or ubuntu may ease a lot of the installation woes as they have excellent package managers which should be easily able to install Python and it's necessary dependencies. I know with CENT OS that it took us 2 days to get everything configured just the way we wanted it to be.
