I am having serious difficulties on installing mediacore on my system. My system specifications are -
1 - OS - Lion 10.7.3 OSX
2 - Xcode Version - 4.3

On following the steps in installation documentation, i am getting issues in -
1 - macports, it seems xcodebuilder is unable to execute
2 - macports does not install mysql 5.

I tried to explicitly install -
1 - Latest mySQL 5.5
2 - Python 2.7
3 - Setuptools
4 - virtual env etc, etc.

But still, when i activated the virtualenv, "PASTER" command was not working and since then nothing is happening.

Please someone help me, and is there any installation guide for (Lion 10.7.3+Xcode 4.3)??

I forgot that the bracket got converted. So for anyone out there to test for the vulnerability, just add /login/continue?__logins=0&came_from=http://www.google.com to your site.

For example, https://www.mymediacoresite.com/login/continue?__logins=0&came_from=http://www.google.com

I am running Mediacore-0.9.2 and it is vulnerable to "parameter based redirection".

Try this: http://<yourmediacore_site>/login/continue?__logins=0&came_from=http://www.google.com

I have tried it on 2 mediacore sites, and they both exhibit the same vulnerable.

1. secured cookie is not use.
2. the /admin/scripts/ is world-wide readable without login.

How do get around that?

Probably a bit too late ("Please, I realy need to get this over by tonight or at least tomorow") but I hate to leave questions unanswered...

> next step: verify MySQL is configured to survive reboots - not working
> but "sudo chkconfig --list mysqld" works
what does it say?

> here is the block, what should I do next?If i do
> sudo cp /usr/share/mysql/mysql.server /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql

forget about that line, it's stupid (unles you self-compile your MySQL server which is even more stupid for the huge majority of users).

Probably the question can be found in MySQL logs. Also check SElinux.

> Please email me and guid me by email if you can,

I'm sorry but at least I can't do that for free. I love to maintain MediaCore as open source but that only works because people pay me to implement new features, fix bugs or get help. I can do free support in the open if I have free time and some energy.

I assume you're using the HTML5 player (so we don't compare Android/Flash with iOS/HTML5). In that case this is probably related to the actual video. With some encoding settings it might be that Android devices have a hard time decoding it (due to software/hardware shortcomings) while iOS works ok.

However the whole HTML5 player is pretty much fixed by the OS/hardware so there is nothing MediaCore can do about it, sorry.

No real idea. However I'd advise using a network sniffer (e.g. wireshark, tcpdump) or Web Inspector (Safari) to see what your browser actually sends to the server. I'd like to see the first lines of the HTTP POST request.

Ok, maybe I'll grab the latest dev build and try it out. Our's is definitely breaking in IE as soon as we go above the JW Player included JS file for 5.5. Even updating to the final 5.5 minor version JS from their website breaks it. All that works is the MediaCore bundled 5.5 JS.

I guess we will experiment a bit.

> However I found some display issues in IE 8 and a FlowPlayer issue in IE9

I've seen some other weirdness in IE with the search bar. I believe in IE7 we've seen the word "search" positioned a 2nd time over the magnifying glass icon.

yes - though I don't remember anything being different to 0.9.1 when it comes to players/the media template.

However I found some display issues in IE 8 and a FlowPlayer issue in IE9.

Ah yes, I didn't notice that bypassing the MediaCore JS for the player has broken the widescreen expand.

Just to clarify, were you testing your latest DEV build with the updated JW Player files or the 0.9.1 release with default 5.5 player?

I just tried rolling back to the 5.5 JW Player and that fixed my IE7/8 issue. If I try upgrading the player to 5.6 or anything newer, it breaks in IE7/8 but works in all other browsers. I'm guessing something changed in the 5.6+ JW Player JS which is not playing nice with MediaCore.

As always, thanks for the info and help!

I retested with IE8 (Win XP) + IE 9 (Win 7) and it works perfectly fine for me without any further modifications.

In MediaCore a player has two sides: One Python class which retrieves the specific configuration and a special client-side counterpart which reacts to client-side events (most notably player resizing, e.g. for widescreen). Therefore removing jwplayer is not recommended in general.

Here's what happened to MediaCore CE since my last report:

Bug fixes:

MediaCore Security Issue (the first as far as I know): Preventing an SQL injection by upgrading SQLAlchemy. Please upgrade your installs.

Finally I managed to fix a bug that submit buttons were displayed without text after a validation error in the admin pages.

Completed Tasks:

Updated FlowPlayer to the latest release version (3.2.10)

Updated JW Player to the latest release version (5.9.2156) - needs testing on IE

Future Plans/Thoughts:

I'll have a look if we can use ijnalepa's suggestion to improve thumbnail quality

User infrastructure/private videos feature was deployed for a customer. I'm polishing some features right now. Currently I talk to a few other customers about some add-ons. Afterwards the code will flow into github and I'll publish a new major release.

Facebook Integration Update: The current MediaCore API for Facebook comments is deprecated and will stop working in June. I'll update the integration and possibly add a bit tighter MediaCore integration.

I now have a VM for the new demo instance. The main thing holding this back is that I have to find time to restrict admin access.

Screencasts for MediaCore install in progress, I need to redo/cut some parts.

Email notification for the forum - waiting for a response from SimpleStation

I became aware a few days ago that Facebook will change their API and
MediaCore's Facebook comments will stop working in June (they already display
a warning). I'm currently pooling customers to get a project budget to migrate to the new Facebook code and I'd like to invite you on that.

I'll update the Facebook integration so the comments will work in the future. I should mention that your existing Facebook comments might be lost during that transition because Facebook but that's a Facebook issue - as far as I can see the new API does not allow getting the old comments (changed IDs).

Depending on the number of participating customers I can also add new features, e.g. a full Facebook like button integration to (optionally) replace MediaCore's liking system. Optionally I can adapt the patch to the MediaCore version you're running on your site + deploy the patch for you.

Of course the new code will end up in github but because of early vacation this year I can't guarantee I can do before June.

ijnalepa on "No Suitable Players Found Error"

We did update to the latest JWPlayer 5.9.x. I'm guessing this is part of the problem. The following link is an example page which produces the error in IE7/8:

http://video.smeal.psu.edu/scripts/third-party/jw_player/jw_markup_test_original.html

So far I've traced the issue to something in the file here:
/mediacore/public/scripts/mcore/players/jwplayer.js

If I bypass this code with static embed shown here, everything works in IE:
http://video.smeal.psu.edu/scripts/third-party/jw_player/jw_markup_test_04.html

The code for implementing the JW Player just seems to be a little out of date. I noticed that "players" is still used but has been deprecated. "modes" is the current method. I tested and this had nothing to do with the IE issue, but I'm wondering if there's something else that IE is choking on.

I did want to ask about permanently bypassing /mediacore/public/scripts/mcore/players/jwplayer.js. I tried to go through the code and figure out what it does, but it just seems to handle various cases and the loading of the player. I believe the embedder JS provided with JW Player does all of that. When I bypassed the above file, it seemed to work fine. Do you think I'd be breaking anything by bypassing the MediaCore jwplayer.js code?

I'm curious what this code actually does as I'm not JS or Python expert.

Also, I saw that you upgraded the repo to the latest JW Player. Were any modifications to players.py or jwplayer.js required?

Thanks!

"media" is a variable available in view.html. On the explore page there are several media under different names.

For example on media object is available as 'featured' (if you display featured items in the player on the front page) and you can use

${featured.format_date(media.publish_on, 'long')}

Other media is rendered through the template function media_grid in helpers.html.

@ijnalepa: You explanantion is correct, just want to explain it a bit differently. Thanks for helping out here.

I'm a total amateur, but have done a lot of tweaking myself... where are you trying to add the publish date? If you're trying to add it to the feature or to media grid items, I'm not sure you should be doing it in this file (explore.html).

If you're adding pub dates to the items in the media grid, try adding to helpers.html in the media_grid def starting on line 12. This is where I've successfully added logic to look at the media type and display different icons.

Not sure but here you may need to use m.publish_on instead of media.publish on... To look at the type field, I had to use m.type instead of media.type.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Trying my hand at a small modification. I'd like to port the date of a clip over to the explore.html from view.html.

In view.html I can't see where media is defined.

This is what I'm trying to port over to explore.html:

${h.format_date(media.publish_on, 'long')}

However when in explore.html it complains that media is not defined...

> Can I download 0.9.2 plus these commits in one step?

No. If you want to have 0.9.2 + additional/selected fixes, the easiest way is using git (possibly with "git cherry-pick"). You may go also with the latest dev version in that case as this will probably be easier to manage in the long run.

(I know I'm being vague here - this is because I don't want to lull you into a false sense of security by providing specific commands while you might need some skills to merge patches along the way).

> I tried downloading a zip/tar from Github but it grabbed 0.9.1..

Huh? Try this link: https://github.com/mediacore/mediacore-community/zipball/v0.9.2

Ok, so Ive just reinstalled the OS, and i need to do this from 0. I have successfully installed in the paste, with other versions, i have installed mediacore for 3 or 4 times now, but since now 2 days when I want to make it again, got a few problems with the steps. I will start now to do all from 0 from here : http://mediacorecommunity.org/docs/
I have nothing installed in the VPS, no libs no nothing.
Ok so the first step is http://mediacorecommunity.org/docs/install/requirements.html

So I need to install the necessary libraries for compiling - done
next step: install any missing system libraries - done
next step: install MySQL server, client and libraries - done
next step: verify MySQL is configured to survive reboots - not working
but "sudo chkconfig --list mysqld" works
here is the block, what should I do next?If i do

sudo cp /usr/share/mysql/mysql.server /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql

doesn't work becouse of the "mysqld"

# locate mysql.server
/usr/share/man/man1/mysql.server.1.gz

Please, I realy need to get this over by tonight or at least tomorow. Please email me and guid me by email if you can, to icecollappse@gmail.com .

Well, if I remember correctly, they are nearly double in some cases, but still not that big of files. That was with a setting of 95. I believe even 90 would look really good and significantly cut down the file size.

This would be a great setting to add to the admin panel at some point when you have nothing better to do. ;)
I'd do it myself if I were capable in python.

MediaCore CE uses a library named 'SQLAlchemy' for database interaction. This
library was found to be vulnerable for SQL injections. The issue is listed
in the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures Database as CVE-2012-0805. I'd like to thank Marco Mariani for notifying me about the issue.

A remote attacker can inject custom SQL in your MediaCore CE database to
read, modify, overwrite or delete MediaCore data in the database. Under special
circumstances the described bug might help an attacker exploiting bugs in your
database software to get elevated system access.

Affected versions: MediaCore (CE) 0.9.x
As far as I can see, MediaCore 0.7/0.8.x is not vulnerable to this issue.

Today I released MediaCore CE 0.9.2 which fixes the issue. This release contains
only a fix for the current security issue so it should be a safe upgrade for
all users of MediaCore CE 0.9.1. Installing the new version will update
SQLAlchemy in your virtualenv to 0.6.8.

You can download the new release from github.

Upgrade instructions can be found in the MediaCore user documentation.

To verify if the upgrade was successful, please check that SQLAlchemy 0.6.8
is present in your virtualenv!

If you are using a git "master" snapshot (internal version number 0.9.2dev)
please update your code to the latest git head in github's master branch. Please
note that several new features went into the master branch so a DB upgrade is
required.

Felix Schwarz

PS: If you need help in updating your version of MediaCore, you may be interested in my professional services.

PPS: There is a MediaCore announce mailing list which is very low traffic. Please
subscribe to that list if you want to be notified about new releases and
security issues.
