MediaCore.com runs on the Amazon cloud and we've completely rebuilt the entire infrastructure so that it's N scalable. If you are looking for a cloud solution then MediaCore.com is the way to go.

As Felix mentioned he helps with maintaining the MediaCore Community Edition and we'd definitely recommend working with him if you're looking to enhance the performance of the CE edition.

We're really only involved in MediaCore CE as far as we're also maintainers and we have done the leg work in creating the site, building the community etc.

> But what i dont really understand that it only happend at "Twitter-Sharing".
>
> Facebooke (like or share) OR Google Plus OR other share possibility works.

Well, unfortunately you did not really explain in detail what happens when you use the twitter sharing. I assume that you can add the item to twitter and some time later (some seconds, minutes) the server becomes unresponsive.

One explanation is that way more people follow your twitter links than on Facebook or Google+. One indicator for that is if you web stats show a big increase in users around the time you post your link.

> I am not sure how i do it right.
> I get a "second" error on Twittershare
> AttributeError: 'Connection' object has no attribute '_Connection__connection'

When you see the exception, please click on "View as: ... Text".

Btw: I hope you don't have your public server running with 'debug = True' in your deployment.ini, do you?

Also I'd recommend you enable error notifications in your deployment.ini so you get an email about each and every exception. Sometimes you see a wide range of exceptions because users see different symptoms. Putting all the exceptions together might be the key to understand what goes wrong.

> but error still occurs.

Then the 'MySQL server has gone away' is because of a different setting. I think you need to dig into your MySQL config to understand why MySQL closed the connection unexpectedly.

"sqlalchemy.pool_recycle" should be smaller than your wait_timeout, 28840 looks ok. Don't lower it just because of the error you reported.

well, please check that nginx+uwsgi are started on system restart (are they running? check with "top"/"ps aux")

Felix

PS: I wish new MediaCore users would stop using nginx+uwsgi for MediaCore. Of course it's a viable option but if you are not a professional sysadmin and/or you never worked with nginx before, please use Apache+mod_wsgi. There is more documentation and there are less gotchas. And I can pretty much guarantee that there is no real performance gain by using nginx.

I have mediacore installed in VMware on ubuntu 32bit. I followed these instructions: https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1DAikm-mCYiNFddClW21S0G-EwzINIC_gUl7pn2jq2zA

When I restart ubuntu, I get a Welcome to Nginx! page. And mediacore no longer works. I have run the two commands at the bottom of the guide. I can roll back the snapshot to right before I reboot, and mediacore works again. However, this is not a permanent solution.

Does anyone know what I have missed?

Thanks in advance,
Brett

ok. i hope i understand it right:

i have "standart" wait/idle timeout at 28840

i tried
set global wait_timeout = 30

but error still occurs.

if i set global wait_timeout = 30 do i have to set sqlalchemy.pool_recycle to 30 ?

sorry for all that questions.

The correct value for sqlalchemy.pool_recycle depends on the setting of your wait/idle timeouts in MySQL.

It's actually also the number of CPUs (as MediaCore can serve more requests in parallel), I'd go for 4 slower CPUs in favor of 2 faster ones.

I'm not sure what you mean about 'adding servers via API'? There is definitively no such thing for the open source version (which is the only one you can install, the cloud version is managed by SimpleStation).

I'm the current MediaCore maintainer, so I'm actually doing only MediaCore development/scripting and offload allmost all design/graphics to specialists.

Yes this helps me a lot. Good to know the CPU is most important and am I correct that Mediacore has already an option for adding servers via API or can they only be used for Amazon services?

PS Do you also develop Mediacore websites (scripting not the graphic design)?

Thx!

3500 users per hour at peak are really not a big deal (that's about 1 user per second). That's easily doable on a reasonably sized machine.

Keep in mind that MediaCore is mostly CPU bound, load on the filesystem/DB is pretty low for common scenarios. So more CPU cores will help to serve more users. RAM is not that important if you have at least 2 GB.

Network bandwidth might be more of a problem if the videos are hosted on the same server (100 Mbit/s bandwidth, 1 user/second means that your network bandwidth will be fully saturated if the average video is 10 MB). Offloading to a CDN/load balancer is highly recommended in this scenario.

Some of my clients run MediaCore sites which need to serve several hundred users within a few seconds (on a single server with videos offloaded to a CDN). That's only possible with some advanced techniques (I created a 'MediaCore Performance Plugin' which helps there). If you need professional help on this topic, just contact me directly (info@schwarz.eu).

Hope that helps.

The view counts aren't tied to the player in any way in MediaCore CE, they are just tied to page loads. At the moment there are no patches for this since it would fundamentally change how views are calculated and would require a more in-depth analytics engine than is commonly built in. I'd recommend getting Google Analytics to track your page loads and player actions.

I am planning to use Mediacore for a high traffic website and want it to run as optimized as possible. Which means I don't want to just add servers or completely rewrite it. Hosting is on the same server, but keep encoding apart so that wont be a problem

So is this possible when I use a Dual core server with 4GB and traffic of about 50k per day and 3500 per hour peaks?

thx.

Assuming that the server does not really "crash" but it just takes 'a long time' (up to several minutes) to serve your page.

Can you check how requests you go 1-2 minutes before these symptoms? I assume: "a lot more than usual"

Then I suspect one of these three problems:
1. You're hosting the videos on your own server. These videos are big, so 100 Mbit/s
network bandwidth is just not enough anymore.
=> do the math: video size * number of views / time
if you're above 60 Mbit/s, you need to outsource your files to a CDN.
2. MySQL locking problems. => Update to the current git, check if the problem goes
away.
3. Check your server's CPU load (using "top" via ssh). Likely it's just fully
loaded. In that case you need to use 'a bigger gun', for example add my
'MediaCore performance plugin' (price depends on your setup, price for a
single-server config is 600 €)

HTH

I've mananged to fix the problem. Here's the solution for those who get this error also next.

I had to get our DBA administrators to log into the MySQL database in Media table.

We looked at a Settings table and in there we changed the values for Decay Exponent and Decay Lifetime to be another value than what I'd entered from the front it. In my case I had it set to 1 and 1. Changed that to 100 and 100 and was able to fix the problem. I can now continue to save and upload values into the system.

Trying to change these values in the front end gives the error but doing it from the database gets around the saving error on the page.
